I longed for dark all day. As Mama had me scrub and clean and reorganize the hairpieces by length and weave and color. As we peeled the butternut and shucked the beans. Fetching, carrying, and everything too loud, too bright and unromantic in the sunlight.

And my feelings grew, soft but strong. And by the time night came and we all fell into our beds, I’m ready for it. For the dark. For Tale.

Cherry’s breathing stills. Then Linda’s. And finally I’m left alone.

I stare at the ceiling and I breathe. My skin shivers at the memory of her feather-touch. I breathe. I feel her kisses, hard. And I remember crawling into her, safe and warm and wanted for exactly who I am, and in the dark, I smile.
